Baby You Save Me

September 2009

The word salvation comes from the greek- soteiria. To be saved is to be healed, to be made well or whole.

Irvin Yalom, in his classic text, Existential Psychotherapy, suggests the each of us have a fantasy of being saved by a super being. Yalom, as an agnostic (atheist?) suggests that this is why the notion of saviors and an omniscient/omnipotent God have such appeal to we human beings… we have an almost innate tendency to wish to be delivered… to be saved. Whether we pursue our deliverance through Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Mother Earth, the silent working of good in the universe etc. is not the point. The point is we seek deliverance. Deliverance from what? The saber tooth tigers of modern existence (our darker impulses? financial ruin? medical problems? Angst? Meaninglessness and despair?), to name a few.

Regardless… regardless of whether you are (or aren’t) seeking salvation (in general or from something in particular)… one of the most sublime takes on salvation is finding ourself, or losing ourself if you prefer, in another being. In a love relationship.

I heard this song today and was taken with it in a new way. If you are in a long term relationship I hope it will mean something to you when it comes to your better half completing and grounding you. It does to me.

You Save Me

Every now and then I get a little lost
My strings all get tangled, my wires all get crossed
Every now and then I’m right up on the edge
Dangling my toes out over the ledge
I just thank God you’re here

‘Cause when I’m a bullet shot out of a gun
‘Cause when I’m a firecracker comin’ undone
Or when I’m a fugitive ready to run, all wild-eyed and crazy
No matter where my reckless soul takes me
Baby you save me

It’s hard lovin’ a man that’s got a gypsy soul
I don’t know how you do it, I’m not sure how you know
The perfect thing to say to save me from myself
You’re the angel that believes in me like nobody else
And I thank God you do

‘Cause when I’m a bullet shot out of a gun
When I’m a firecracker coming undone
When I’m a fugitive ready to run, all wild-eyed and crazy
No matter where my reckless soul takes me
Baby you save me

I know I don’t tell you nearly enough
That I couldn’t live one day without your love

When I’m a ship tossed around on the waves
Up on a highwire that’s ready to break
When I’ve had just about all I can take
Baby you, baby you save me

When I’m a bullet shot out of a gun
When I’m a firecracker coming undone
When I’m a fugitive ready to run, all wild-eyed and crazy
No matter where my reckless soul takes me
Baby you save me
