The Beatles and the Beatles Remasters

October 2009

I have been putting off trying the remastered Beatles albums… My fear has been that I’d hear a marked difference in the album I tried and then would have to buy all the Beatles albums again. I’ve already done this once when CD format came out.

I am very pleased to say that I purchased a copy of “Revolver” (the remaster) and I couldn’t hear enough difference in the sound to make me need to rebuy all the remaining Beatles albums. This was a relief. There were some cuts in which the sound was a little different, but again, certainly not different enough for me to crave all the remastered albums.

All of this made me think again as to why I personally feel such a connection and affinity for the Beatles music. I remember, as a 12 year old (when going through a very trying time in life), coming home from school and lying in bed and listening to Beatles songs for hours on end… The White Album, Seargant Pepper, Revolver, Help, Hard Days Night, With the Beatles, Rubber Soul, Magical Mystery Tour etc. etc.

Years ago I worked with a woman who agreed with me that the Beatles are without doubt the greatest rockin’ roll band of all time because they, “Defined a generation”. I was only 9 years old when the Beatles were dissolving. They certainly didn’t define my generation. Nonetheless, their sound, their lyrics touched me very, very deeply.

To this day I hear their songs and I can recite most of the lyrics to them.

One song that still brings tears to my eyes today when I hear it (that I spent hours and hours listening to as a 12 year old) is “For No One”.

There are too many spectacular singer-songwriters/bands to mention in a blog… nonetheless the Beatles are in a league of their own musically and culturally. Elvis may remain the King of Rock n’ Roll but the Beatles are the Parliament.

For No One

Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you

She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn’t feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

You want her, you need her
And yet you don’t believe her when she says her love is dead
You think she needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone but now he’s gone
She doesn’t need him

Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be times when all the things she said will fill your head
You won’t forget her

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
